Character Name: sarugaki hiyori
Canon/OC: bleach!
Age: Anywhere between 200-400, however she appears as a teen, anywhere between 13 and 17.
AU/Previous Game History/Etc?: None.
Appearance: Hiyori is a petite woman, she is about 4 feet, 4 inches tall. Though she is small, she is strong, though it is hard to tell due to the fact that her muscles look almost non-existent, but there is meat on those bones. She is very knobby, too small to be like a woman, but too big to be a child; somewhere in between. Her breasts aren't really all that noticeable to most, leaving one to wonder if that this girl is actually a boy. She has freckle dotted cheeks and a stray-fang that leads Shinji/Ichigo to calling her "snaggletooth" more than once; both making her seem much younger than she was. Her hair is a pale blond, pulled up into two pony tails, heaving her hair up over ears that just protrude a little too much.
She carries herself in with a straight back and stiff shoulders, showing off that she's proud and fighting, but slouches when she's alone or with her friends.
She is extremely fit, able to fight for hours without getting over-exhausted, but she is prone to getting hurt quiet a bit due to her lack of self control, a big example of this is when Gin managed to cut her in half during the climax with the fight with Aizen.
After timeskip, we can speculate that while she was bifurcated by Gin -- that she would possible have a large scar left where the incision was made -- as well as a possible disability due to it, however, as she has not been seen as of yet after the time skip -- this is only speculation. This, does not, however effect how I’m playing her here however as she is taken moments before being cut in half.
Hiyori has different styles of movement, sometimes she will move with a tense fluidity, others she will be clumsy and generally very arrogantly. It really is all about the situation she is, the former is usually seen in battle, almost jumping out of her skin to be able to fight the people around her, tense with anticipation though moving almost like water with going through the motions of a fight. The later is more around people she is showing off around or her close friends -- clumsily not only with her words and her body.
To those who know her, they would simply see a tomboy-ish little monkey. To others, she would come off as an untouchable tsundere loli. She does not find herself extremely attractive and in her head, no one else does either. It is a thing that both annoys her and slightly pleases her. One some level, she wishes she would be seen as a fighting beauty -- though Shinji has basically run through it through her head, possibly unwittingly, that she is not cute in the least and pretends to accept it. It pleases her in the way that it means that while no one would find her attractive -- she would be free to do what she loves. Train and fight.
She is light -- but not completely pale per say. She is covered in childish freckles that make her seem even younger than she is.
Her hair color is pale blonde, it seems to have a mind of it's own in her opinion, so she always sticks them in piggy-tails and puts a few bobby-pins in to keep the bangs out of her face. The texture is almost unnaturally soft, despite being a tomboy, she does take pride in how well she takes care of her hair, even if no one notices (Lather, rinse, repeat, baby!).
Her eyes are brown, almost akin to the color amber.
A few noteworthy features of Hiyori are that she has freckles on her cheeks, a scowl on her lips and a pink jogging suit with her name in Kanji on it (Depending on what clothes she‘ll have access too). Another very noticeable feature is how fierce her eyes look. She looks constantly angry, almost as if someone is doing something to annoy her just by breathing, her eyes are hard a lot of the time, though they are expressive either way -- though have (a lot of) moments of being the window to the girl just beneath the surface. In a way, her eyes are the best way to tell how Hiyori is feeling -- if you can't read them for any reason, it generally means that she's having a conflict within herself.
Once more touching on her clothing… Hiyori tends to wear jumpsuits and the like, if she is played pre-timeskip, she wears a pink and white jumpsuit with her name in kanji upon it, with a white sleeveless shirt underneath it and sandals. Her clothes fit well enough, some being looser than others due to how small she is (she constantly has a fit over this, finding it almost too annoying that she needs to shop in the children's section sometimes). She most definitely feels comfortable in them, no matter what she's wearing she needs to always feels good in what she wears. She dresses however she goddamned pleases, she doesn't see the point in dressing up in anything that isn't comfortable for her. Hiyori would most likely rather punch someone for even trying to get her into something she wasn't comfortable in.
Her voice is in the middle spectrum of the female vocal range, but with a hoarse quality to it, especially when she's yelling at people. She’s loud, obnoxiously, she doesn't think about what her words might end up doing to those around her. She speaks her mind, a complete mind-to-mouth reaction from her.
Her dialect is very interesting, people from our world would possibly call it ‘southern’ (if we were talking English-wise), though it’s not really all that at all. As she drops "Gs" at the end of words such as "nothing" (would be nothin') and says "Fer", "ya", "ta", "tha" instead of "for, you, to/too, and The". She says 'Ain't' and tends to drop letters at the begining of words like 'around' or 'about'. She also drops 'me' for m'-word' or the I've for 've'-word- and 'r' for or/are and 'n' for and.
She speaks Japanese (Extremely fluent due to it being what she learnt when she was alive and how she was taught in Seiteirei), English (she is fluent in this, only due to 25 years she spent alone wandering in the Americana. It's possible this is where she gets her extremely relaxed way of speaking, this is however headcanon).
History/Personality: I combined the history and personality sections because I needed to use the history to explain her personality.
She’s not very eloquent with her words… as she just spits out whatever comes to mind, she has no use for thinking over her words -- unless it is a situation where she absolutely needs to convey how serious she is and beating the crap out of someone isn't enough, but even then she has to say what just comes to her head -- just with a tiny more bit of thinking involved. You could even say she’s extremely inarticulate, a good case of a 'foot-in-mouth' type speaker -- having to force herself to say what she actually means than what comes to her head. She has extreme problems trying to get the right meaning to whatever she says. She stumbles through words awkwardly, she's never sure on how to say what she actually means to anyone. It bothers her a lot -- as she would love to get what she's feeling out, though it comes off as stammering and mixed up to those who hear her. There are few people who actually can get the true meaning out of her words -- Shinji, for one -- and understand that it's hard for her to get those emotions out without going off in a completely different direction when the conversation gets to hard for her to continue.
As a Shinigami, she was trained at Shino Academy in Seireitei. Otherwise, very little. She doesn't put a lot of stock into the traditional method of education, preferring to feel her way through everything instead of sticking her nose to a book.
Hiyori is definitely street smart, she isn't the type to sit around and read books when there is fights just begging to be picked. She knows it too, she prefers leaving the thinking to those who actually have the patience to it, or even just Shinji, but she is able to predict others movements when she's watching them fight. You could say she just reacts to the situation, even if her response leads to something bad for herself. She has a fight-or-fight type reaction to everything, there is no 'flight' about her. A very huge case of this would once again be just before the point where she was cut in half, where she simply reacted and rose to the bait that Aizen was setting out for her. The fact of the matter is, that if there is something annoying her, she will react or if there is something that needs to be done, she'll do it. She won't think about it, she'll just get it over and done with no matter the consequence.
Hiyori most definitely thinks with her gut, if it feels right, she does it. She has no particular fighting style because of it, her swords-play could almost be considered a swordsman's version of "Drunken Kung-Fu". However, she prefers to think with her gut -- to react without thinking, thinking, in her head, would only complicate situations more than they already are, thus she forgoes the thoughts and simply jumps right into the action. She is definitely more practical than idealistic, knowing how the world works and that she firmly believes that 'Nothing can last forever' -- that's the practical part of her. Though her idea of practicality is much different than say, a normal persons. Where they might think things through -- Hiyori will cut to the end of the chase and just react, as she finds this is the best way of getting what she wants and/or needs.
She is an introvert in the way that she's socially awkward, unable to voice how she feels and comes off as extremely untouchable, however, she's a extrovert in the way that she has no problems beating the crap out of anyone and is overly loud and obnoxious.
She is extremely angry all the time. Some may argue that it's the only feeling she might be able to hold on to beyond fleeting happiness and depression. Her rage lingers on the flick of a switch, it's violent and she is not above using underhanded tactics to enact such rage upon whoever sparked it on her. She doesn't trust easy, she never has. As a result of it, she treats everyone disrespectfully, (though she expect respect back towards herself) a trait that she finds reflected in Ichigo (And is extremely jealous of everything about him).
She reacts with complete and utter suspicion towards new people, unable to get it through her head that possibly they might want to be her friend in any possible way. She is often critical of those she first meets, telling Orihime and Chad that while she was jealous of the meaning of their names, she would have to ill them because the conversation was becoming pointless. Her anger helps fuel the fact that she finds herself so unlikeable that she cannot comprehend why others would even want to get close enough to her to get to now her. It should be pointed out that she views every new person as an enemy at first… though no one but Aizen and his crew are on the levels of a completely different tier of enemy.
She has a thing about reacting… she will react to everything you do, so much so that sometimes you can't be sure if it's just not an 'act' instead of a 'react'. She is extremely unable do much else than just that -- if she is teased, baited or anything of the sort; she simply will react. There is nothing there showing otherwise and as such, it's why she was bifurcated by Gin due to allowing Aizen to crawl under her skin and burrow himself there like a tick and poke every button for just what he craved -- It's a extreme weakness of hers, as she puts everyone, not just herself; in danger and forces those around her to pick up the pieces. She admits that she was out right impatient as her "last" words to Shinji in the fight with Aizen and is clearly aware that this is one of her huge faults.
Hiyori will always fight. She believes that the best defense, is a flawless offense. As such, if you challenge her, she will do everything in her power to defeat you and shove it in your face (and then kill you, if you're an enemy, of course). She takes her fights very seriously, often seeing the option of bloodshed more appealing than running away and regrouping -- Again, she knows this, as she admits to Shinji she was sorry for reacting to the taunts of Aizen and being severely hurt. However, one could argue that this is one of her defining traits -- To the point of it being a shining quality, as she will never back down, no matter the odds, even if she loses. Some may admire her for that sort of strength, while others could call her arrogant and cocky for believing that running isn't in her code of honor.
She has a strange sense of humor, one that is rarely seen as "nice" in anyway. She will resort of pranks for no other reason than someone ate her goddamned pudding (She has more than once replaced all the shampoo in the warehouse with glue, glued all of Shinji's furniture to the ceiling, replaced his Jazz LPs with children's ones). However, when it comes to teasing from Shinji/anyone, she can dish it out but simply cannot take it. At all. Ever.
Some wonder if Hiyori has a mental problem and I respond with that if her anger is a mental disorder, yes, she does. And she deals with it via taking it out during training or fights with everyone and anyone.
She has many moments in her life that have defined Hiyori as a person, some could be when she realized that Urahara was staying as her captain and she learnt to trust him, becoming an visored -- or even getting bifurcated. They all help shape her as a person and help her trust people a little more -- especially Shinji.
You could ask “what does she fear?” And I could reply with many things… A big one would be never being able to fight again, this is the biggest fear as she never feels better than when she's fighting someone seriously -- the blood-lust that fills her makes her remember that while she isn't a part of her old family any more -- she still has the other Visoreds, Urahara+co and now Ichigo. She wants to be able to protect them -- though more often than not she finds Shinji protecting her.
It's very clear that losing Shinji/her other family is another fear -- she reacted badly to them all being called dead, in my opinion, wasn't because she was targeted, she reacted because her family was anything but dead. They all lived, breathed, they all were so jovial -- She finds herself jealous of it more often than not, but she would rather die than have them insulted in front of her.
Shinji, she fears him in a very weird way, not in the way that is most common with being 'attributed' to the word, but in the way that she finds it unsettling that he reads her so well, he knows her inside out and sometimes even what she's thinking. It unnerves her when he pretends to be speaking to everyone, but every word he says is directed right at her. She fears him because she doesn't know what she'd do without him.
Hiyori doesn’t have many hopes or aspirations beyond getting revenge on Aizen for having the Visoreds ostracized from Soul Society…. One could argue that beyond the need to get stronger and stronger and not doing much else than that that she floats along at this point.
There are a few things that Hiyori doesn't want anyone to find out about her. That she's a romantic -- She's never been kissed, at all. She wants her first kiss to be with the person she loves and she doesn't want anyone to know due to the extreme teasing that Shinji, Love and anyone else would give her for it. She wouldn't be able to stand it if someone she didn't love tried to steal it from her, even to the point of reacting with almost killing them.
During the 50 years she spent apart from the other visoreds, she was alone, she worked at seedy bars, etc, but when she had the time to herself, she would sit out on a hill near by and stare at the stars, she made constellations from all over the place, all creating a intricate story that she doesn't know if anyone would even care to hear -- and no one's asked why she sometimes sits on the top of the warehouse at night and just looks at those stars either. They don't ask, she doesn't tell.
She doesn't remember her biological parents, but her former Taicho, Hikifune; was the closest she's had. She treated the woman with respect that no one else would ever get. She refuses to treat anyone else on that same level, though she does 'respect' other people in some vague way.
On Hiyori’s part, when she was the Fukutaicho of the 12th Division, losing her previous captain who she saw as a mother, she gained Urahara, the previous third seat of the second division; as her new Captain. It should be said that Hiyori hated Urahara on sight, she didn’t care who he was at all, she only saw him as an intruder, showing her extreme distrust of those who almost intrude on the family she has -- new people in general even. Though, she does come to trust him when he saves her in the Maggots Nest and even more-so when Urahara saves her and the rest of the Vizards/Visoreds from execution after Aizen’s actions start the hollowification on them and end up defected due to it. It only cements that she can and will learn to trust -- that it is possible to join her small circle of ‘family’.
Some could argue that all of the Visoreds are siblings and that Hiyori will kick the crap out of them for nothing less than them being stupid in her eyes, but she loves them all. She would lay her life on the ground for them and protect them when they need it -- Otherwise, she does not have any siblings.
The people who Hiyori has considered family have grown exponentially! Urahara and Co, The Visoreds and the umbrella's been sprung out to even cover Ichigo. Considering at first, her only “family” would have been Hikifune (her previous captain) and those of the 12th Division, not to mention Shinji. It grew and then shrunk -- leaving her very unwilling to trust again.
With Urahara and Co she has a strange relationship there, she runs there when she's angry and needs a place to hide out from the rest of the Visoreds, finding Yoruichi somewhat pleasing to talk to -- and almost finding Urahara's familiarity with how she works comforting.
With most of the other visoreds, she treats them like they're her brothers and sisters, she would protect them and they would protect her, she would gladly lay her life down for them.
Shinji, however -- is a harder case to describe. They tease and fight each other, though they both are considered to have a 'schoolyard-romance' by the rest of the others in some ways. She does believe at some points, that it's them against the world; that they will have each other's back no matter what happens between them. I am unsure if she even knows what to call her feelings towards Shinji, possibly due to never knowing what love exactly was supposed to feel like, but she knows that the other is her best friend and she would rather protect him and be killed than have it the other way around. She trusts him more than anyone else in the world.
Ichigo; it is a very weird relationship between them -- she sees so many parallels between them both, though the way he handles everyone, or the way everyone loves him drives her insane with envy. She's jealous of them and the way he can be so forwards with her words, while she simply stumbles along -- but he's a visored, so she considers him her brother by default.
Hirako Shinji is definitely this girl's bestfriend, it's unclear how they met each other, but they did know each other before BTP arc in Bleach. It's shown that they care so much about each other -- one could say so easily that the only reason Shinji came was because Hiyori was out there. The rest of the Visored are her friends, yes and while she trusts them and they trust her, they are not on the same level as Shinji to her.
She can't make friends at all, she's jealous of those who can. It's partly because of how she views herself, finding herself nothing more than a crass monkey that is completely unlikable and violent; that she simply assumes that no one would want to get close to her. It doesn't help that she has trust issues and is very suspicious of those who do try to get close to her, seeing it as some sort of cruel joke that she somehow managed to warrant for herself.
To Hiyori, friends are below family. Above everything, there is family. She would die for her family, to protect them or their honor. This is shown in the fight with Aizen to an extreme point.
Hiyori sees marriage as something she wants and views cheating as a down right stupid move, to her, if she was married and loved her spouse, then why would she even look at anyone else? Marriage is sacred to her, as is kissing and dating, she only wants to get married once and to the person who would stay with her forever. Hiyori has very romanticized views on sex, as well… She feels that it should be between two adults that love each other enough to know that they'll be together for a good long time. She's a virgin and waiting for just that -- hell, she's never ever been kissed. Yet, that isn't to say that she's never gotten off by her own ministrations, she is a woman with urges and she does give into them sometimes.
She doesn't believe she's ever crushed on anyone, however… Though onlookers might say that Shinji has been her first and only crush... yet, to her, as someone that has no idea what it's supposed to feel like, she would assume that what she feels for Shinji is nothing short of normal for two as close as them.
You may ask, since I brought up the situation with Shinji… She says looks for a romantic partner who treats her like a woman, understands that she doesn't need to be protected. They would have to stay at home and not ask questions if she came home late, someone who'll make her dinner and take her out on whims -- typical girly things.
Yet, what she wants deep down is completely different, she wants someone who can take her words and fists, punch for punch, someone who'll have her back through everything and take it upon himself to cool her down if she edges into an explosion. They wouldn't bat an eye when/if she came home with a broken nose and a bloodied cheek, only access the damage and fix it up and let her collapse on him if she needs it. She wants him to be snarky, witty, a jack ass in his own right, but still caring when it's needed. They gotta catch her when she falls and put her back together when she breaks -- most of all, they need to trust her as much as she trusts them.
I see her sexual orientation as flexible, she is not the type to go and jump into a bed with a random woman or anything -- but she is open to the fact that maybe whoever she falls in love with may be female, though she finds herself looking at men more often than not, always finding herself jealous of girls with bigger breasts.
Despite being a Shinigami… She is very not religious or spiritual, she finds both annoying, as she'd rather be out there fighting than sitting around and learning about things that happened before her time. These two things are not important to her at all.
What Hiyori does have however, is a moral code. She views her morals and ethics to be extremely important in her life. Family before everything else, revenge right after. She would never compromise what she believes in, finding the whole idea of her having to bend to make other people happy ridiculous and against what she stands for.
You may wonder how she reacts to clashing or differing beliefs or morals, but she reacts with disinterest. She simply doesn't care about other's beliefs, she doesn't ever think that religion should ever define a person -- they could be a Christian, killing in the name of god and all Hiyori would do would focus on the word 'murderer'. As long as you agree to disagree, there is barely anything that would ever bother her about the religions.
She holds prejudices against both Shinigami's and humans, for shinigami's the reason is more than good -- they sentenced her and her friends to death for another man's crime against the world. For humans -- she hate how they take everything for granted, how oblivious they are to what they have, among other things.
She's a visored, and as such, the way other she have viewed her and her friends has most definitely it has changed over time and her views of the same thing! She is very, very, very conscious of how things have changed in her life. She is not fond of it, but she doesn't exactly... hate it anymore. She's comfortable where she is now and that's all that matters to her.
She lives in a warehouse with an underground training area below it -- damn right it's her castle, she defends her home like a knight. Consider that everyone else was a mote and she is the crocodile that would eat you if you simply pissed her off enough. Yes, she lives with others, all other visoreds. They are... a special family.
When she does have money -- or those around her do, she asked for simple things; pudding, clothes and astronomy books and items, mostly so she could figure out the stars that make up her personal set.
Her eating habits are interesting to say the least… She eats everything she can, but absolutely skips meals sometimes; mostly because she'd be too engrossed in training. She doesn't drink often, as she's found that when she's drunk she gets far too "nice" for her personal preference; she often saves it for a special occasion, such as a "birthday" or the anniversary of them getting leaving Soul Society and coming to the mortal world. Her favourite food ever is pudding -- she will go ballistic if she finds her personal stash has been compromised and is most likely to prank everyone if no one comes forwards to claim responsibility for it.
The jobs Hiyori can get could be easy to point out… She fights and enters dojo tournies to get the money she would need to support her very secret astronomy hobby, and she's wonderful at it, almost always coming out first in her matches unless she sees it fit to throw it for the sake of appearing human in some way.
Her hobbies can be put into two things. Training and anything to do with Astronomy. Training, is her most out hobby, she loves it to death and if she's not training and it's night out. She'll be on the warehouse roof top, mapping out more constellations, adding more and more to the story that she's come up with.
Abilities/Skills: As a Visored/Vizard, she is able to enhance her already there Shinigami powers, but as well. As a visored/vizard, she also has some hollow powers.
She has extreme amounts of strength and speed. When her mask forms on her face she simply only gets stronger and faster. As an ex-Fukutaicho of the 12th division, it is best to note that she is above most "normal" characters and possibly stronger than some other regular Shinigamis -- not to mention that she's been shown to have an extreme amount of expertise in swordsmanship and hand to hand combat (As seen whenever she kicks the crap out of Hirako Shinji or fighting other opponents with her zanpakuto). It is without question that due to her dual type spiritual energy (Hollow and Shinigami, respectively), that she has an immense amount of it -- it is pink, it should be noted and she is able to concentrate it enough to form a blast strong enough to knock targets away.
Being a Vsored/Vizard, she is able to use a cero (A concentrated blast of spiritual energy that only Menos Hollows, Arrancar and Visoreds/Vizards are able to use), hers is maintainable and a long red beam that she is able to sweep more than one enemy at once.
Her zanpakuto (Kubikiri Orochi) does have a name and it's own very strong powers (Shikai: Chop Cleanly, and it changes shape to a large cleaver with a serrated saw-like blade. However, it's power is unknown.)
Belongings: Her zankpakuto, two note books, and the clothes on her back.
Samples:
3rd Person Prose Sample: She's breathless, moving to fast does that to her now. The blond stops, pants heavily and swings her zanpakuto over her shoulder almost nonchalantly, though the stress of the mock fight shows all over her face in the way of pain. She has an hour left before her friends return from wherever they were, she wants to get back to where she was, though everyone wanted her to take it slow.
They want her to accept being weak, they want her to accept that she can't do anything anymore.
They're wrong and she's determined to prove it to them at any cost possible.
She's not so sure when she realized it either, but now she holds everyone back and they won't let her get back to where she was – let her stand on her own goddamned feet.
Shinji wants to protect her, everyone else watches out for her just in case – fuck them, fuck them all.
She hates it, but she hates him even more.
It's all his fault. That bastard -- Aizen, he's the reason why she can't do what she used too. She hates him more than she could ever thought possible at first, even more now than she did when he had them explused from their home. Sentenced to death, but now that's gone and all that's left is the hatred she feels for him and everyone else.
She's not allowed to do what she used to because of that fight, fuck him. Fuck him with a cleaver and anything else deadly.
Hiyori moves slightly, shifting to sit on a rock, leaning Kubikiri Orochi against her knee, she pants, eyebrows furrowing and shoulders rolling. She knows her middle will start aching more if she continues, yet the pain simply makes her strive to be more active, to overcome this.
She remembers the feelings, the words so goddamned clearly-- She tells herself to breathe in and out. Slowly as she remembers every goddamned details.
She thought there were always more than one way to skin a cat. Calm, she needed (if only she had been calm) to be calm, she couldn’t freak out there, not then. She can hear Shinji’s words in her ears, so fucking clearly, almost like he was there behind her, speaking those words that had been directed at her. They told her -- don’t react, you can’t, you’ll fuck everything up. She couldn’t even deny them -- all truth, if she reacted bad things could happen. That her reaction was more important, they needed her to stay calm-- fucking calm, no anger, she couldn’t be angry then. There was to much riding on this -- to much riding on her not reacting. Everything was riding on it, well had been.
She can hear Aizen clearly, his words cutting through her thoughts like a well sharpened blade even now – months after his defeat. Her family wasn’t supposed to to exist. It sounds through her mind. She feels the lingering anger from that day surge through her and she remembered that she couldn't and wouldn't stop it though when she hears those words-- He insulted the only thing he didn’t manage to take away from her.
Her family.
She rushed forwards, Shinji had been yelling and hadn't been able to give a fuck, red being the only color flooding her vision – that bastard the only thing she saw; barely feeling the clean slice of a sword against her mid-drift and then--
“Sorry,” she whispers outloud. She remembers Shinji's face, everyones face as he held her.
She shakes herself out of it, eyes glaring at the ground. Almost faintly, she picks up the noise of feet against the floor – she can hear someone calling her name. She doesn't want to stop – but she knows it'd be better if she did. She sheathes her sword and stands, moving back towards the door, calling out for whoever to hear her.
“'M'in here.”
